What’s the Difference Between Magnesium Citrate and Magnesium Oxide?

What’s the Difference Between Magnesium Citrate and Magnesium Oxide?

What’s the Difference Between Magnesium Citrate and Magnesium Oxide?

Magnesium might not get as much attention as some other vitamins and minerals, but it really is important for our bodies. It helps keep our muscles working as they should (including our hearts), supports a healthy nervous system[1], and helps turn the food we eat into energy. Magnesium also works with Calcium and Vitamin D to keep your bones strong and healthy.

Something we don’t realise Magnesium does, is find the right balance of fluids in our bodies. When our Magnesium levels dip too low, you might notice muscle cramps, tiredness, mood changes. Keeping your levels topped up is important for staying in good health.

There are several forms of Magnesium used in supplements, each with slightly different benefits and absorption rates. Two of the most popular are Magnesium Citrate and Magnesium Oxide.

Function

Magnesium Oxide

Magnesium Citrate

Typical Use

Common in cheaper supplements and antacids

Often used for correcting Magnesium deficiency, supporting muscle/nerve health

Contains less Magnesium per gram

Gentleness On Stomach

More likely to cause stomach upset or loose stools in sensitive people. Can be used as a stronger laxative in higher doses.

Generally gentler. Sometimes can be used for mild constipation (has a gentle laxative effect)

Are There Are Side Effects With Magnesium Supplements?

While Magnesium supplements are generally safe, excessive intake can cause diarrhoea, nausea, and stomach cramps. Excess Magnesium can lead to gastrointestinal issues due to its laxative effect.

Always follow the recommended dosage and consult a healthcare professional if you do experience side effects, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions.

What Are The Signs I Am Deficient In Magnesium?

Not having enough Magnesium in your body can cause various problems. You might feel muscle cramps, get tired easily, or have an irregular heartbeat. Your mood could swing a lot, and you might feel anxious. You might also experience tingling or numbness in your body. Low Magnesium can make your bones weak and increase the risk of fractures. Your blood pressure might go up, and you could have trouble sleeping or get frequent headaches. It might be hard to concentrate and think clearly.

If you notice any of these signs, it could mean you have low Magnesium levels. It's important to talk to a doctor to find out for sure.

Why Our New & Improved Magnesium Gummies Are Better

As you’ve probably noticed, we used to stock Magnesium Oxide tablets - but we’ve now switched to highly absorbable Magnesium Citrate in a gummy format (paired with Vitamin B6). That means your body can get more of the benefits from every dose. Each daily serving (two gummies) provides 300mg of Magnesium plus 1.4mg of Vitamin B6 for extra support. We’ve paired it with vitamin B6, which not only supports energy metabolism but also helps regulate hormonal activity.[2]

And because we believe wellness should taste as good as it feels, our gummies are vegan friendly, naturally flavoured, and coloured with purple carrot juice… no artificial nasties here: SHOP NOW
