Haunting Habits We Need To Ditch
Halloween is here, and while ghosts and zombies may be fun for a day, some everyday habits can haunt our health and wellness all year long. Instead of waiting until January to hit reset, why not start now? Every day is a new chance to make small, meaningful changes that support your body and mind.
We’ve put together a few everyday habits that might be spooking your wellness and shared how we can banish them for good!
Starting The Day With Your Phone
Your phone alarm goes off, and before you’ve even checked in with yourself, you’re checking messages or social feeds. It feels harmless, but reaching for your phone first thing can set the tone distracted day. You should be starting the morning with a clear head, so you’re not overloaded with information straight away.
⛓️ So, how do we break it? Try charging your phone away from your bedside table and use a real alarm clock to avoid the temptation to scroll first thing.
Over Indulging With Caffeine
A morning coffee (or two) can give you that boost you need, but when caffeine becomes your main source of energy, it can start to be a problem before you realise. Having too much caffeine in your routine can lead to energy crashes, anxiety, and disrupted sleep - all of which can leave you feeling more tired and become counter productive.
⛓️ So, how do we break it? Start by swapping every other coffee for water or herbal tea to stay hydrated and reduce your dependency. Some people also like to set a cut-off time for caffeine drinks (usually by dinner time) to protect sleep quality.
Taking Vitamins On An Empty Stomach
This may surprise a lot of people, but some vitamins (especially A, D, E, and K) need dietary fat to absorb properly. Taking them on an empty stomach can reduce how much your body actually uses or can even cause nausea or stomach upset.
⛓️ So, how do we break it? Pair vitamins with a meal or snack that contains healthy fats such as avocado, nuts, eggs, yogurt, or a smoothie. Make sure you still take them at the same time each day to make it a consistent habit.
Neglecting Hydration
Skipping water is something we’re all guilty of, but dehydration quietly affects almost every part of your body. It can cause fatigue, headaches, brain fog, dry skin, and even impact your digestion. Your body simply can’t function at its best without enough fluids and caffeinated or carbonated drinks won’t cut it.
⛓️ So, how do we break it? Keep water nearby by carrying a bottle or placing one on your desk or table as a visual reminder, and set small goals like aiming for a glass every hour. Make hydration more enjoyable by infusing your water with frozen fruit, herbs, or cucumber.
Not Using Skin Protection Year Round
Suncream isn’t just for summer… UV rays still penetrate clouds and windows, meaning your skin is always at risk no matter the season. Skipping it can lead to premature wrinkles, dark spots or dryness. Even in colder months, consistent protection helps maintain skin health and prevents long term damage.
⛓️ So, how do we break it? Keep your suncream visible by placing it next to your toothbrush or makeup/skincare, and incorporate it into your routine by applying it after cleansing. Choose products you love and set a mental trigger by thinking of suncream as an extra “get-ready” step.
Let’s be honest with ourselves, habits are something we’re all guilty of. Some are small, some sneak up over time, and breaking them can feel like climbing a mountain. The truth is, it’s all about mindset, patience and consistency. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but every small step counts.
We’d love to hear about the habits you’re working to ditch (or the ones that keep sneaking back!)
