Give anxious dogs the support they need to live happy and healthy lives

Humans with anxiety can go to a doctor, explain their symptoms and receive treatment - but it's different for dogs. Many dogs suffer in silence, and it takes an attentive family member to see that their pup isn't feeling great.

Anxiety is common with pets, and certain times of the year can increase their symptoms. The good thing is plenty of treatments are available that have calming properties to relieve anxiety and help your dog feel secure.

Sealions is one of the UK's most cost-effective supplement providers, offering a range of effective vitamins and minerals for the whole family - including your pampered pooch.

Our calming supplements are designed to offer relief to pets in distress and can be added to food or used as treats.

How common is anxiety in dogs?

Dogs are a man's best friend, and they're usually the first to greet a family member when they walk through the door. These four-legged pooches are characterised by their playful natures and wagging tails, so it can surprise people to know that many dogs are prone to anxiety.

A study published in Scientific Reports involved assessing over 13,000 dogs in Finland to look for signs of anxiety. The results showed that 72.5% of these dogs showed some anxious behaviour, with noise phobias being the most common.

Other prevalent forms of canine anxiety included heights and dogs worrying about walking on different surfaces.

The causes of canine anxiety

There are numerous reasons a dog might display anxiety, and as canines are predisposed to it, even the smallest factors might contribute to your pet displaying negative behaviours.

There are four primary anxiety-related disorders, and the symptoms depend on the root cause.

Rescue/Shelter Anxiety

Often, dogs that end up in shelters are victims of abuse, abandonment or grief. All of which have a negative impact on them. If a dog suffers from abuse, it will develop anxiety around people and other animals, which can show as hiding away or aggression.

Of course, even previously abandoned dogs can find it hard to trust and become anxious when they feel their new family might be abandoning them.

Bereaved dogs also have a hard time adjusting to life without their person, and a big part of managing the dog's anxiety is building a strong and consistent relationship.

Separation Anxiety

While most dogs with separation anxiety come from unstable backgrounds, some pets can develop it after their pet parents go on holidays or if there's a change in environment.

Illness Related Anxiety

If you notice that your previously happy dog is showing symptoms related to anxiety, it could be due to an illness. The most common diseases that create anxiety include:

Pre-diabetes

Diabetes is quite common in dogs, and anxiety appears along with constant thirst, weight gain and the possible appearance of cataracts. As with humans, dogs with diabetes need regular treatment to prevent the condition from worsening.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism causes excessive weight gain, hair loss and lethargy, so your pet might appear anxious or low in mood.

Encephalitis

This serious condition can cause brain swelling, which can lead to a coma in severe cases. Your dog might become aggressive, suffer from seizures and display anxiety due to the severity of the symptoms.

Vision and Hearing Loss

Imagine suddenly losing your eyes or ears, and you'll see why anxiety occurs in dogs with hearing and eyesight problems. Many animals are routine-based, and losing a part of that routine can devastate your pet.

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome

Canine cognitive dysfunction often occurs in older dogs, similar to dementia that some humans suffer with age. The common symptoms include disorientation, anxiety, house-soiling and different interactions with family members.

Social anxiety

Social anxiety is a disorder that can affect dogs of all breeds and sizes. It usually occurs in social situations like meeting new people or other animals.

Dogs with social anxiety may appear timid and avoid eye contact or hide behind their owners. In severe cases, dogs may exhibit aggression, such as growling or snapping.

Social anxiety can be challenging to manage, but several treatment options are available.

Generalised anxiety

When there's no apparent cause of anxiety disorders, they usually fall under the 'generalised' umbrella. Many describe it as a sustained period of worry and fearfulness, often in response to seemingly innocuous stimuli.

The common signs of generalised anxiety include panting, pacing, destructiveness, and separation anxiety. In some cases, dogs may also experience loss of appetite, shaking, and diarrhoea.

While the exact cause of generalised anxiety is unknown, it's attributable to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. For example, some breeds are more susceptible to anxiety disorders, including:

  • Labradors
  • Collies
  • Australian & German Shepherds
  • Cocker Spaniels
  • Greyhounds
  • Toy Breeds

There are some ways you can improve your dog's symptoms, but medication is usually the most popular because it offers numerous therapeutic benefits.

However, along with medication, you can try the following holistic treatments:

  • Using calming music to relax your pet
  • Seeing a dog behaviourist
  • Use dog anxiety aids such as beds or toys
  • Try valerian root and hemp seed oil (in moderation due to sedative properties)

How calming supplements can help your dog's anxiety

Both humans and animals have a built-in fight or flight response, often triggering during stressful situations. In most cases, the mechanism is a natural occurrence and can often help keep your dog safe from threats.

However, when this response occurs without provocation or during imagined threats that don't exist, it indicates a severe anxiety problem.

Dogs can get distressed, and pet parents may also feel the burden because situational and illness-related anxiety can be difficult to treat and identify.

Luckily, there are calming supplements available that can help to ease your dog's anxiety when triggers arise.

Common dog anxiety triggers include:

  • When dogs become separated from their favourite human or pet companion
  • Worrying during bonfire night or other celebrations that use fireworks
  • Thunderstorms (the loud noises and lightning can impact your dog's senses)
  • Unexpected visual stimuli, including umbrellas, dolls, or unexpected objects
  • Adjusting to a new environment or pet

Dog calming treats or supplements reduce the symptoms of anxiety-related behaviour

There are plenty of calming supplements for dogs, and their main purpose is to reduce anxiety during potentially stressful situations. For example, you can introduce your dog to the supplement before bonfire night so that they will be better equipped for the fireworks.

While you can find pharmaceutical-grade medicines, a natural calming supplement can be just as effective and won't come with any nasty side effects.

Our Soothe & Calm supplement is perfect for people who want to protect their furry friends but prefer to stay away from prescription medications.

Soothe & Calm is one of the most effective supplements for dogs, and it's available for just £5.00 for 90 tablets. Packed with beneficial ingredients, you can give tablets to your dog as a treat or combine them with their food.

Magnesium Oxide

Never underestimate the sheer healing potential of magnesium oxide for pooches. It can prevent seizures and muscle spasms and can promote relaxation.

Vitamin B

B vitamins are essential for a properly functioning nervous system and can effectively reduce stress and anxiety. Also, B vitamins are water-soluble, which means it is safe for dogs to take standard doses.

Folic Acid

Folic acid promotes normal metabolic function, so that it can be a beneficial supplement for dogs with thyroid issues. Also, any deficiency can result in mood disorders and anxiety, so adding folic acid can support your pooch.

Why choose Soothe & Calm?

With so many calming products available, it's difficult to know where to start, but our supplements are ideal for helping your dog moderate anxiety during stressful events. When taken correctly, Soothe & Calm can have a calming effect on your dog.

Whether your pup suffers from noise phobia, separation anxiety or illness-induced anxiety, our supplements for dogs will induce calmness and provide temporary relief.

Better still, they have a chicken liver flavour, so you won't have to worry about your dog spitting the supplement out.

A versatile dog-calming product

Made with all-natural ingredients, this supplement is something your dog won't turn its nose up at. However, if you have a particularly fussy pooch, just crush or grind the tablet and mix it with your dog's food.
